Weekend in Paris, France

Posted: 21st June 2010 by Luciano Araujo in Photography, Summer 2010 in France

Due to the proximity from Rennes I chose Paris as my first weekend trip of a few that I have planned. On board of the TGV it takes just over 2 hours from Rennes to the heart of Paris. Quite convenient and comfortable trip, though the round trip cost is not THAT cheap: 90 Euros for 2nd class. There are cheaper fares if booked far in advance and/or if you travel late at night or very early in the morning. Some of my friends from Rennes and I left eary Saturday morning and we were in Paris at 9am ready to explore the city of lights. The weather was cool and with some clouds which made it real nice to walk around but not very nice to take photos.

The first day we mainly walked around the 5th and 6th arrondissements and spent plenty of time in St. Germain, an area which I have spent little time in the past. Here is where the Jardin du Luxenbourg (Luxembourg’s Garden) is located. Its a park with plenty of green and lots of loose chairs for people to sit around. We came here around lunch time and there were small groups enjoying a sandwich as well as entire families having an all out picnic with wine and champagne! :) I really enjoyed the quiet but lively streets of St. Germain with authentic cafes and restaurants. I think next time I come to Paris this is where I would like to stay. In this area we got to see a very good band playing outside on a closed street. The Seine river in the background and live jazz music… typical Paris!

Our second day started a bit late as some of us didn’t get back to the hotel until really late! We made a point to go see the big touristic spots like Basilica Sacre Coeur, Torre Eiffel, and Champs Elysees where we ended the day and enjoyed a few bottles of wine while watching the chic locals and goofy tourists walk by. Actually, one of the things that I didn’t like about Paris this time around was the number of American tourists everywhere. They are usually speaking really loud and complaining about something. It is very easy to spot a group of Americans here in France, but I will try to compile a “how to spot an American in France” list and make it a separate post.

Paris is a big city and like most big cities it has its problems. The metro is for the most part “clean” but some stations have homeless people around and stinks like urine. Another thing I noticed is the amount of African immigrants selling fake purses near the tourist attractions. I think that underneath the Torre Eiffel there were about 50 of them. I don’t have anything against street vendors or immigrants (c’on, I am one) but it takes the beauty out of these magnificent places. But despite some negative things I was able to notice this time, Paris still a magical and romantic city. I certainly have a bigger appreciation for the charming and quiet city of Rennes now. Below are some shots of the city.
