Weekend in Dublin, Ireland

Nearly 15 years later I returned to Dublin, Ireland for a weekend trip. Dublin was not one of the places I wanted to visit during my stay here in France, but I happened to jump on this trip as a guest and the plans were already made and the arrangements were very inexpensive. I purchased my round trip air ticket leaving Nantes for only 40 Euros. We also found a really nice hostel in Dublin called Isaacs for 12 Euros per bed per night including breakfast. With all of these factors falling into place we headed to Dublin.

We arrived early morning Saturday and headed to the Hostel to drop the bags and hit the town. We didn’t have much planned out other than walk around town and see the “major” landmarks. And that is what we did. With a map in hand we basically came up with a nice walking itinerary and enjoying the good weather we walked around town! To our surprise, that Saturday afternoon was the Irish Gay Parade and the entire city was taken over by rainbow flags and gay people from all over town. :( Nothing against the gay community, but their parade made us walk an extra hour just to get across from the blocked roads. After walking around all day we headed back tot he Hostel to take a quick nap and get ready to head to Temple Bar.

Temple Bar is not “a bar named Temple” bur rather an area of Dublin with many pubs and nightclubs. In this area is where U2 used to perform before back in the day. The main street of Temple Bar is lined with pub after pub and all of them with a great atmosphere! We incorporated the strategy of bar hopping and went on to have drinks at different pubs. Later on that night we hit a pub that had an awesome band playing some of the greatest hits from U2, Oasis, Coldplay, The Killers and other bands of the same genre. Definitely the best time we had was at this pub. Hearing songs like Sunday Bloody Sunday and Wonderwall at a traditional Irish Pub while drinking Guinness was quite an experience! :) The band at this place played the songs in a way that the crowd did most of the singing . . . awesome times! Once the band finished their set we took the party to a nightclub nearby where we partied till late that night.

On Sunday we joined a free walking tour of Dublin which was quite insightful. The 4 hour tour took us around some of places we hadn’t been to on the first day as well as some we already had. After the tour we took a break for lunch and watched the England vs. Germany world cup match at a pub. Yet another great experience to watch the Irish root for whoever is playing against England. Germany put a hurting on England so the Irish people were quite happy. Later that day we visited the Guinness factory which I personally enjoyed very much! 10E for students and you get half a pint in the middle of the tour and a pint at the end at their 360 degrees rooftop bar overlooking the city of Dublin. Great way to end the day. For our last night in Dublin we did more of the same . . . . drank Guinness and sang at the pubs. Cheers!
